PEDESTRIAN WALKWAYS
With Pablo Pita
Porto, Portugal
Ongoing

1st Prize

 Competition

The general purpose of the pedestrian walkways lays on the affirmation of an “east to west longitudinal walkway” through architectonic pieces that, together, will draw wider level transpositions that work as an “urban staple” of its strategic points.
Strategically the intervention seeks to encourage an idea of spatial interconnectivity, translated into a circular course on a wider scale. At the upper level the circulation is already consolidated and identified, seeking to connect the Palácio de Cristal to the Virtudes, closing a cycle.
An elevator is set in Palácio de Cristal garden which leads to Rua Sobre-o-Douro. In Miragaia, the design of fragmented escalators helps to overcome Monte dos Judeus. To the Passeio das Virtudes we arrive from a succession of stairs and elevator, passing through the garden, integrating these two areas.
The proposal does not want to rupture, neither with the history of the city nor with its environment and its materiality. Therefore, the development of new routes and improvement of existing ones presents a clear strategy of symbiosis and continuity with the existing heritage and identity, without, however, failing to take on the new elements as the marking of a new time of intervention.
